Qld: Tsunami victims squad honoured
A police officer .. honoured for his work in identifying victims of the Boxing Day
tsunami .. says his award's for the team effort involved .. and not just himself.
Senior Sergeant KENNETH RACH drew on 28 years of experience with Queensland police
to help out in the aftermath of the tsunami .. which followed an undersea earthquake off
Indonesia on Boxing Day 2004.
He says while he'd been to some major disasters before .. including the 2002 Bali bombings
.. nothing prepared him for the scale of the devastation caused by the tsunami.
More than 186 thousand people were killed in the disaster.
RACH'S work involved helping set up a temporary mortuary .. drawing up a potential
victims list .. working to track down family members and obtain identifying details of
the dead .. and eventually repatriating the remains to their families.
Today .. he and others who went to Thailand were presented with the Commissioner's
Certificate .. in a ceremony in Brisbane.
