Fed: Last gasp of Abbott and Costello case

CANBERRA, April 6 AAP - The Abbott and Costello defamation case was back in court today,
for what was probably its final gasp.

In a two-minute hearing, publisher Random House applied to get an exhibit back.

No problem, said ACT Supreme Court Justice Terence Higgins. Case over.

The public may never know just what the exhibit was.

Justice Higgins said the document from the 1998 trial, referred to only as "Q", remained
confidential.

The case related to the 1997 book, Goodbye Jerusalem, by Bob Ellis.

Mr Costello, the federal treasurer, Employment Services Minister Tony Abbott and their
wives sued Random House over a 33-word anecdote.

They won and Justice Higgins awarded them $277,500.

The Federal Court last year dismissed Random House's appeal.
