Fed: World-first protection plan for reef
The federal government has announced a plan to make the Great Barrier Reef the most
protected coral reef system in the world.
The blueprint, tabled in parliament today, would increase fishing and shipping-free
zones from 4.5 per cent to more than 33 per cent of the marine park.
Environment Minister DAVID KEMP says the network of marine sanctuaries protects areas
of unique and precious biodiversity, as well as acting against over-fishing -- one of
they key threats to the reef.
Conservationists have praised the plan, with WWF Australia describing it as a stunning
achievement and a win for all Australians.
The Australian Conservation Foundation says it's a great improvement, but more must
be done to answer pollution and climate change.
But the Queensland Seafood Industry Association says jobs will be lost, as too much
of the reef has been closed to commercial fishermen.
